The doctor uses a caliper to measure the crania of the men going up the Congo to research what is going on internally. This is pointless because he does not ever get the measurements of the men when they get back. The doctor is performing a useless job that is just showing the beginning of how ridiculous the rest of the jobs of the Company are being performed.
